MASCHERE AFRICANE - AFRICAN MASKS

Nelle società europee ed occidentali generalmente la maschera era
ed è intesa come travisamento, copertura liberatoria che permette
scherzi a volte anche pesanti e/o libertà audaci.
In Africa invece, la maschera era usata in occasione di cerimonie
religiose o coadiuvanti lo svolgimento della vita della comunità,
quindi occasioni pedagogiche, giudiziali o inerenti alla caccia, alle
colture, ecc.
In ogni caso il danzatore che indossava la
maschera diveniva lo spirito della maschera sia
essa umana, animale, divinità o mitologica, maschio o femmina.
Esistono diversi tipi di maschere africane: da volto, da fronte, da testa,
a casco, fino alle più grandi e pesanti che a volte erano sorrette
sulle spalle. Generalmente in legno, ma ne esistono anche in metallo, cuoio,
osso, avorio e fibre, le maschere erano scolpite e rifinite con patine
varie, conchiglie, chiodi, lamine di metallo, penne e piume e dipinte con
pigmenti di vari colori.
Le maschere in esposizione provengono da varie popolazioni dell’Africa occidentale e centrale.

In European and Western world,
the mask is and has been conceived as&nbs
p;a disguise,
a form of hiding that can allow jokes,
at times quite extremes,
and/or audacious behaviour.
In a totally different way, in Africa
the mask was used in occasion of religiou
s cerimonies or along with the
life of the
community, for example teaching occasions, judiciar
y or hunting, harvest, etc.
In any case
the dancer was becoming the
spirit of the mask itself whether it was&
nbsp;human, animal, divinity or mythological, male
or female.
There are different kind of african masks:
the one to be worn on the face, the front, the
head or as a cask.
The bigger and heavier masks sometimes were&nb
sp;supported on the shoulders.
Usually in wood, but also in
metal, leather, bone, ivory and fibres,
the masks were sculpted and finished with
;different patinas, shells, nails,
metal sheets, feathers and painted with colour
