Sin dai primordi, la fertilità, e di conseguenza la maternità, sono state di capitale importanza.
A maggior ragione in Africa, luogo nel quale la mortalità infantile era ed é ancora in percentuali elevate.
Presso diverse popolazioni africane, notoriamente gli Ashanti e i Fanti del Ghana, erano scolpite bambole col compito di aiutare la fertilità ed assistere durante la gravidanza.
In molte zone dell’Africa occidentale e centrale gli scultori hanno prodotto statue celebrative della maternità. Donne col bambino al seno o portato sulla schiena, come é costume in Africa o in ogni modo raffigurate con figli, erano oggetto d’ammirazione e culto.

Dolls that were supposed to help fertility and assist during pregnancy were used by many african populations, noticeably the Ashanti and Fanti of Ghana.
The sculptors of many areas of West and Central Africa have produced statues celebrating maternity. Portraying women breast feeding or holding their child on the lap or carrying him on the back, as it is customary in Africa or, in any case with children, the statues were venerated and worshipped.
