La popolazione ORON vive nella zona del Cross River nel sud-est della Nigeria.
Le statue “EKPU” celebravano un notabile della popolazione ed erano custodite nei santuari ed onorate due volte all’anno.
Le due statue in esposizione sono di notevoli dimensioni (cm.104 e cm. 109), monoxili ed ognuna evidentemente scolpita da un grande tronco. Hanno entrambe una lunga e puntuta barba a torciglione che rende ancora più solenne l’espressione dei grandi volti con acconciature o cappelli a bulbo.
Il corpo arrotondato e con scarificazioni tribali, finisce con gambe corte. Le mani sorreggono oggetti appartenenti al personaggio raffigurato.

The ORON population live in the Cross River area, south-east of Nigeria.
The “EKPU” were celebration statues of important people, kept in the sanctuaries and honoured twice a year.
The two statues exhibited are of large size (cm. 104 and cm. 109). They are monoxiles and each obviously sculpted out of a big tree. Both have a long and pointed twisted beard to add to the solemn expression of the large faces with  bulbous hairstyle or hat.
The rounded body with tribal scarifications end with short legs. The hands hold objects belonging to the represented person.
