Sebbene la conoscenza della gomma o caucciù si sia sviluppata solo agli inizi del 1900, in effetti, l'uso della fionda o lanciasassi, risale a tempi ben più lontani quando erano usate stringhe di cuoio, corda o budella di animale ancora fresche.
In Africa Occidentale diverse popolazioni: Lobi, Senufo, Dogon e soprattutto le popolazioni Akan hanno usato e usano ancora fionde per cacciare i pipistrelli, prelibatezza della cucina africana.
I Baulé in particolare hanno amato avere fionde scolpite con figure antropomorfe e zoomorfe, sicuramente per ingraziarsi gli spiriti della caccia ed assicurarsi abbondanti prede.
La figura di donna si riferisce ovviamente alla fertilità e abbondanza.
A volte quindi siamo dinanzi a mirabili sculture di piccolo formato sviluppate in oggetto d'uso.

Il reame KUBA si sviluppò nella zona centrale della Repubblica Democratica del Congo e oggi comprende diverse popolazioni, tutte assoggettate al re dei Bushoong.
Ogni popolazione ha prodotto tessuti di fibra vegetale, la rafia, usati come gonna in occasione di feste e cerimonie. Erano pure usati per regali importanti e come pagamento.
I disegni sono sempre astratti e geometrici. Le tecniche sono svariate: velluto, tie-dye, appliqué, ricamo, ajour, ecc. I colori sono minerali e vegetali, quindi dal nero ai toni del marrone, beige, giallo, ruggine in infinite gradazioni. I disegni possono avere una certa regolarità oppure variare da uno all'altro senza interruzioni.

The use of sling-shots or catapults dates back quite a while when strings of leather, cord or fresh animal guts were used. Rubber, in effect, arrived later, only at the beginning of 1900.

Quite a number of different populations of West Africa: Lobi, Senufo, Dogon and specifically the Akan populations have and still use sling-shots to hunt bats, delicacy of the african cuisine. In particular the Baule´ loved to have anthropomorphic as well as zoomorphic subjects sculpted in their sling-shots, most probably to please the spirits of hunting and secure an abundant catch. The female representation refers quite obviously to fertility and abundance.

In effect sometimes we look at admirables small sculptures developed into objects of use.

The Kuba kingdom developed in the central area of the Democratic Republic of Congo and today it is formed by different populations, all under the rule of the Bushoong king. Each population has produced fabrics made with vegetable fibre, raffia, used as skirts in the occasion of festivities and cerimonies. They also served as a means of payment as well as important presents.

The patterns are always geometric and abstract. The techniques are many: velvet, tie-dye, applique´, embroidery, ajour, etc.

Mineral and vegetable colours were used, from black to brown, beige, yellow, rust in endless shades. The patterns can repeat quite regularly or flow from one to another without interruption.

In mostra una selezione di statue, maschere e oggetti d'uso di diverse etnìe africane.
Alcuni esemplari provengono da collezioni europee.

Un CALAO della popolazione Senufo (C. d'Avorio) dal grande becco che tocca il ventre
prominente e due piccoli uccelli sulle ali, simboleggia la fertilità e la continuità della specie.
Una porta di casa della popolazione Bamana (Mali) con relativa serratura in legno e chiave di metallo.
Un piccolo sportello di casa o di granaio della popolazione Dogon (Mali) raffigurante due seni in rilievo, simbolo di abbondanza.
Un grande coccodrillo, rettile sacro per molte popolazioni africane, proveniente dal Togo.
Della popolazione Fon (Benin e Togo) una statua rappresentante la lotta fra un uomo e un coccodrillo. Curioso l'abbraccio quasi sensuale fra i due.
Una grande maschera NIMBA della popolazione Baga (Guinea Bissau). Nimba era la divinità che propiziava la fertilità e le maschere erano quindi utilizzate nelle cerimonie celebranti nascite, matrimoni, raccolti, ecc.

From the Senufo (Ivory Coast) a CALAO with the long beak touching the swollen belly and two
small birds on the wings symbolise fertility and continuation of life.
A house door from the Bamana (Mali) still with it's own door-lock and metal key.
A small ventilation door from a house or granary of the Dogon population (Mali) showing two brests, symbol of abundance.
From Togo a beautifully carved big crocodile, sacred reptyle for many African populations.
A statue showing the fight between a man and a crocodile is from the Fon (Benin and Togo). Curious the almost sensual embrace between the two.
A big NIMBA mask from the Baga of Guinea Bissau. Nimba was the god favouring fertility and therefore the mask was used in birth, marriage and harvest cerimonies
