IBEDJI YORUBA NIGERIA

Presso la popolazione Yoruba, la più numerosa del continente africano, stanziata nel sud-ovest della Nigeria e zone limitrofe del Benin, era ed è ancora oggi molto importante il culto degli IBEDJI.
Ibedji significa gemello e in questa popolazione avvengono nascite gemellari o multiple in percentuale più alta d'ogni altra popolazione del mondo.
E' un fenomeno tuttora inspiegato che tuttavia fu visto come evento straordinario, tanto che gli Yoruba crearono una divinità protettrice dei gemelli chiamata appunto "ERE IBEDJI".
Esistono festività e riti collegati agli Ibedji. Le famiglie nelle quali sono avvenute nascite gemellari, prendono parte alle processioni tenendo le statue con cura e a loro sono fatti auguri e piccoli regali.

The cult of the IBEDJI was and still is very important for the Yoruba population, the largest in the African continent, living in the south-west of Nigeria and nearby areas of Benin.
Ibedji means twin and the Yoruba have the highest percentage of twin or multiple births in the world. The reason of this is still unknown, but it was seen as an extraordinary event and the Yoruba created a protective God called "ERE IBEDJI".
They started special cerimonies and festivities in which the families that had twin births take part holding the statues with care and affection and people offer them presents and good wishes.

EWE - TOGO

La popolazione EWE vive in Togo e nelle zone limitrofe del confinante Ghana.
Gli Ewe sono noti per le statue chiamate "VENAVI" nelle quali il legno è lasciato al colore naturale o sbiancato con caolino. Acconciatura, scarpe, sopracciglia, capezzoli molto frequentemente sono dipinti in nero.

The EWE population lives in Togo and in the nearby area of the neighbouring Ghana.
The Ewe are known for their statues called "VENAVI". The wood is left in natural colour or whitened with caolin. Hairstyle, shoes, eyebrows, nipples can be painted in black.
